History
Nā Pualei O Likolehua is a community based non-profit organization that was established in 1976 by Kumu Hula Leina’ala Kalama Heine (‘Ala) and now under the direction of her daughter, Niuli’i Heine.
The mission of Nā Pualei O Likolehua is to maintain the cultural traditions of mele oli and mele hula by upholding the values of its protocols, to enrich the spiritual balance of oneself through discipline and remain responsible to the ʻāina.
Since the passing of our beloved Kumu Leināʻala in 2015, Kumu Niuliʻi Heine continues her motherʻs tradition to train young people to become future teachers of Hawaiʻi, to preserve and perpetuate hula as a living art and dance form.
" ʻO ke aloha hoʻi e hoʻomau ʻia ana." The love that forever will be continued.
This line is taken from one of the many compositions created by our Kumu Leināʻala Kalama Heine. In her mele it describes the love for our land, for our kupuna, and for all that is Hawaiian and that has continued down through the generations and lives today. It is a promise to uphold our kuleana so that these traditions, our land, and our way of life and understanding can be perpetuated on into the future. Appropriately, we also understand it to represent the love the ʻAla had to share with us through the mele and hula, and ultimately our responsibility to carry it forward.
May you embrace all that she has taught and share it forward to all you come across.
May her spirit live in all you do.
